My imagery derives from my love of
nature. This passion drives me to continue my photographic explorations
to capture its beauty on film and paper. Initially, my intention was to
do all my work in color. However, on-going photographic education and
training has enchanted me with the aesthetics of black-and-white
photography and has resulted in focusing my efforts exclusively on that
medium. Black-and-white photography removes the distraction of color and
the thinking that color alone defines the natural world. Black-and-white
enables greater awareness of the various lines, forms, and textures also
present and how these other characteristics are affected by natural
light. As part of my increased ability to see the world in this
different way, I have also begun to photograph weathered human artifacts
(such as the interiors and exteriors of old buildings), especially when
the available light brings out their unique forms and textures.
In additional, I have increasing come to realize that I am also striving
to find in my photography the peacefulness and tranquility that is
increasing missing from life in the 21st century. I have heard from
people who view my work that they also sense in my images the serenity I
am trying to achieve.
While my initial college education was in chemistry, my artistic drive
has always been equally strong. My black-and-white nature and landscape
photography, with its emphasis on both field work and darkroom
processes, uniquely combines my scientific background, love of nature
and artistic vision as well as giving me a continued sense of well-being
and peace. |
